This volume features 22 eyewitness accounts of the Armenian Genocide, which were written immediately after the events they describe. The reports cover diverse regions including Adana, Bitlis, Caesarea, Diarbekir, Erzerum, Harpoot, and Mardin.
The compiler of this volume, Rev. James Barton, was the foreign secretary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. In the fall of 1917, as American missionaries left the Ottoman Empire, Barton wrote and asked them for signed statements about their observations.
His collection is a detailed panorama of a systematic, empire-wide effort to annihilate Armenians. The touching, dramatic, first-hand accounts continue to serve as witness to the violence.
